Nijmegen makes a full switch to natural gas
All city service buses in the Dutch city of Nijmegen will combust natural gas as of mid-2010. This was announced last week by the Arnhem-Nijmegen City Region, responsible for public transport in the city.
A total of seventy-five buses should be replaced by CNG buses by june next year. The city region already looks further ahead and makes note of the possibility of using biogas.
The concession period will last from 2010 to 2013, which is remarkably short considering the substantial investment needed to get seventy-five brand new CNG buses on the road within such a limited time frame.
Some questions arise. Will the city region share in the financial costs? And how serious are the plans to use biogas?
