Marijke Vos reveals NS scooter

Now here is something we expect will easily find its way into everyday life and settle itself firmly.

As opposed to some initiatives, like the electric tuk tuk, that very much have our sympathy but seem primarily suited to draw attention to the cause of sustainable mobility, the electric scooter is a no-nonsense solution likely to appeal to many.

The 'OV-fiets' (public transport bicycle) has quickly become a well-known, successful brand in the Netherlands. The national railways' (NS) user-friendly rental bike solves the problem of continuing your journey from the railway station on, especially when you have to be in a city centre.

After a successful trial in The Hague, this week the NS officially took the electric OV-scooter into use at Amsterdam Amstel station, and Rotterdam and The Hague central stations. Other major stations will follow on September first. Amsterdam environment alderman Marijke Vos, together with OV-fiets director Kay Mook revealed the first scooter at Amsterdam Amstel.

Perfect for those who were hesitant still to rent a bike, afraid to get sweaty or wrinkle their best suits, or for those who have to travel further than a few metres from the station.
